H. DAVID STARR
DEPARTMENT MANAGER, SENIOR ATTORNEY
H. David Starr is an Associate Attorney managing the Trademarks and Copyrights Department of The Nath Law Group.
Mr. Starr’s practice involves all aspects of trademark, unfair competition and copyright law including the following:
- Trademark Clearance and Prosecution: Counsels clients on the availability and registration of trademarks and secures trademark registrations in the U.S. and throughout the world. Mr. Starr also represents clients in matters before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
- Policing and Enforcement: Assists clients in policing and enforcing their intellectual property, including online counterfeiting activities; coordinates with U.S. Customs officials on counterfeit seizures and criminal prosecutions; prepares cease-and-desist letters; and, secures domain names from cybersquatters. Mr. Starr has also participated in significant IP litigation matters before federal trial and appellate courts.
- Strategic Agreements: Negotiates and drafts IP-related agreements, including trademark, software and copyright licensing agreements; music, publishing and media services agreements; and, sponsorship and broker services agreements.
Professional Profile
Mr. Starr received his J.D. degree, with honors, from the George Washington University Law School, and his B.A. degree, with honors, from the University of Maryland. During law school, Mr. Starr interned in the Office of the General Counsel at the United States Copyright Office, and at the Recording Industry Association of America where he assisted with governmental relations and anti-piracy/copyright enforcement efforts.
Mr. Starr’s articles on legal developments in intellectual property law have been featured in the BNA Patent, Trademark and Copyright Journal the A.I.P.P.I. Journal of the Japanese Group, China IP Magazine, Toast, and the Copyright & New Media Newsletter. He also regularly contributed to his previous firm’s IP Newsletter.
Mr. Starr is an active member of the Intellectual Property Section of the District of Columbia Bar. He has served on the Section’s Steering Committee and has also served as the Section’s Trademark Committee Chair and Copyright Committee Vice-Chair. Mr. Starr is also an active member of the International Trademark Association (INTA). He presently serves on INTA’s Online Reference Committee. Finally, Mr. Starr has been a featured speaker at programs sponsored by the District of Columbia Bar’s Intellectual Property Section, the DC Independent Film Festival, Washington Area Music Association, Yes!Circle, American Marketing Association (DC Chapter), DC Web Women and George Washington University.
Mr. Starr is admitted to practice before the Bars of the District of Columbia and the State of Maryland.
