Overview

Susanne M. Hopkins is a Partner in the Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Department of The Nath Law Group. Ms. Hopkins has been practicing intellectual property law since 1987, primarily in the biotechnology, chemistry, pharmaceutical, biomaterial and medical devices specialties.

Prior to joining The Nath Law Group, Ms. Hopkins was employed in both private and corporate practice. She was General Counsel of LifeNet Corporation, where she successfully managed intellectual capital by developing patent strategies; managing patent portfolios; monitoring competitive activity; collaboration and partnering; in- and out-licensing; resource allocation; and, strategic positioning. Ms. Hopkins has drafted and negotiated various agreements, including: licensing and technology transfer agreements; strategic alliance agreements; and, joint venture agreements. She has secured domestic and foreign patent protection; secured trademark protection; and prepared legal opinions on patent validity, infringement, and freedom to use for both domestic and foreign clients. Ms. Hopkins has prepared appeals to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Board of Appeals and Interferences on behalf of her clients. She has counseled both emerging and mature companies on intellectual property issues, such as the strategic development and management of intellectual capital.

Ms. Hopkins earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the George Mason University School of Law in 1991. Prior to entering law school, Ms. Hopkins spent over eight years as a Research Associate, both in academia and industry, where she gained hands-on experience in protein chemistry, microbiology, molecular genetics, and immunology. Ms. Hopkins graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in cell and molecular biology from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Ms. Hopkins is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and is also a member of the Bar of the Commonwealth of Virginia. She is a member of the American Intellectual Property Association.
