Overview

Robert T. Burns is an Associate Patent Attorney in the Electrical, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering Department of The Nath Law Group. Mr. Burns focuses his practice on patent prosecution and counseling, helping clients preserve, protect, and expand their intellectual property rights. He has written and prosecuted patent applications in numerous technologies, including satellite and radio communications systems, MEMS devices, semiconductors, medical devices, power generation systems, Internet-related inventions, and business methods. Mr. Burns also advises clients on patent clearance, due diligence, licensing, and trade secret issues. He has supported several U.S. District Court patent litigations, and was extensively involved in a state court trade secret litigation.

Before joining The Nath Law Group Mr. Burns was a patent attorney in a large international law firm, and has more than 10 years of civilian and military engineering experience. He is a commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and a graduate of the Navy's nuclear power training program. Prior to practicing law, Mr. Burns worked for Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding, where he designed aircraft carrier combat systems. He then worked for BAE Systems, where he specialized in mobile satellite communication systems and was a two-time winner of the Chairman’s Bronze Level Award for Innovation.

Mr. Burns received a J.D. from Regent University School of Law in 2005. He graduated in the top 5% of his class and was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He was a board member of the Regent University Law Review and a student member of the James Kent American Inn of Court. He received his B.S.E.E., with distinction, from the University of Rochester in 1993.

Mr. Burns is a member of the American Bar Association and the Alexandria Bar Association. He is admitted to practice in Virginia and the District of Columbia and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
